Haven’t posted in a while. It’s not that I’ve been busy – I just haven’t had the impetus to do so.
ICC pictures have come out much better lately now that I put in some serious time into learning how to use the advanced microscope at PBRC. Also, during my last experiment we observed spontaneous formation of red cells in one of the wells. My mentor says they probably are erythroid cells. Naturally, we’re repeating the protocol (involving the directed temporal manipulation of the canonical Wnt signalling pathway). Here are some HES cells stained fro DAPI and β-actin after undergoing a cardiomyocyte differentiation.Otherwise, I’ve been watching (and re-watching) lots of movies and listening to more audiobooks lately. I watched 127 hours yesterday with my parents. The movie was very stressful to watch. Here’s a list of movies I’ve recently seen:

There are a few more I’d like to see. I listened to Outliers, Tipping Point, and currently am listening to Blink! all by Malcolm Gladwell, whose unfettered prose makes for good narration.
I also had my mid-term for my Biophysics class. It wasn’t particularly difficult – 10 questions, all short answer. There wasn’t anything I struggled with. I’d be surprised if I got less than a 95 on it.
I have a presentation next week for my Chemistry of Proteins class regarding protein-ligand interactions, so its preparation will occupy most of my time this weekend. I have to give a detailed explanation of three techniques used to quantify this. I’ve found two – ELISA (which I do), and ITC. Looking for number there after this post.
As far at strength and nutrition go, I’m trying something new – attempting to gain weight. The goal is to end at around 165-170 lbs. I’m staying fairly consistent with training and whatnot. The most important thing is to log everything so as to understand what works with my body. It’s an interesting process – eating more and trying not to feel guilty, but the best part is that it is entirely controlled and meticulously documented.
